Souhaitant lui aussi durcir sa ligne, le gouvernement finlandais « a décidé de préparer une solution nationale […] on how to limit or completely prevent this Russian tourist traffic, Finnish Foreign Minister Pekka Haavisto said on Wednesday evening.

These measures “could include new legislation, which would be adopted very quickly, or an interpretation of current legislation”, he said.

“Finland also does not want to be a transit country for Schengen visas issued by other countries. We now want to put this transit under control,” said the minister.

Helsinki is calling for a common European decision but “it cannot be sure that it will happen quickly”, according to Mr. Haavisto.

According to a survey published by the daily Ilta Sanomat On Wednesday, about 70% of Finns want to see an end to the issuance of tourist visas to Russians.

After Vladimir Putin’s announcement of the mobilization of hundreds of thousands of reservists to relaunch his offensive in Ukraine, border traffic intensified somewhat on Thursday morning according to Finnish border guards.
