Without fanfare, Emil Heineman is probably one of the hopes of the Habs who had one of the best performances in the rookie tournament. The 20-year-old striker scored a few goals and showed some interesting qualities.

Moreover, on the most recent edition of Tony Marinaro’s Sick Podcast, ex-scout Grant McCagg mentioned that he particularly liked the performance of the 6’2, 194-pound Swede.

He has the physical assets. His shooting and skating are already NHL caliber. He doesn’t have great hands or agility, but he’s a strong straight-line skater. These two qualities will give him a chance to make the NHL.

McCagg adds that due to the surplus of forwards in Montreal, Heineman will have to play with the Laval Rocket first. In the American League, however, he should have plenty of ice time and he can work on his game.

However, there is an important little “twist” to consider in this case.

Indeed, as was the case with Mattias Norlinder last year, the attacker’s contract includes a special clause. According to this, Heineman has the right to return to Sweden if he does not break through the formation of the Canadian this year. Since the chances of him playing with the Habs are nil, he will return to the other side of the Atlantic.

You can also read my colleague Félix Forget’s text on the subject to learn more.

In the end, McCagg doesn’t expect a stellar offensive career from the Panthers’ former second-round pick, but sees him in a supporting role:

He certainly has the potential to be a top-9 player in the NHL.

-Grant McCagg

Last week, Mathias Brunet had also described the young man in a similar way in one of his texts, mentioning that he was “spirited, fast, responsible, but more limited offensively”.

Like McCagg, Brunet doesn’t think Heineman will become a 50-goal scorer, but he does think he could be a winger on the third or fourth line.

Reading these descriptions, some might be tempted to compare the Swede to Artturi Lehkonen, but you have to understand that the Finn is much more gifted offensively than Heineman. By comparison, Lehkonen had 33 points in 49 games in the Swedish league at the age of 20, while the one who had been acquired in the Tyler Toffoli trade had only 16 in 38 games.

But precisely, speaking of Toffoli, remember that in this transaction, the CH had also got their hands on a first round choice, which eventually turned out to become Filip Mesar.

In short, if Heineman, Mesar, or both, end up establishing themselves with the Habs in the long term, then we will speak of a successful transaction.
