COVID-19: unions call for a 10-day leave bank

Three major labor organizations are calling on the Quebec government to grant a 10-day bank of COVID-19 sick leave to all workers who cannot telecommute if they are sick due to the nature of their job .

“To ensure that the instructions of Public Health can be respected, it is still necessary that the workers have the means to do so!” wrote the Federation of Quebec Workers (FTQ), the Confederation of National Trade Unions (CSN) and the Central Trade Unions of Quebec (CSQ) in a joint press release on Thursday.

The three central trade unions say they see an insufficient number of sick leaves for workers in the major networks, such as those in health, education and early childhood, and fear “that this will become an obstacle to compliance with the instructions” since these latter cannot do their work remotely.

“The last thing you want is for our workplaces to become places of spread because people had no choice but to go to work, even sick. The last few weeks, and probably those to come, remind us that all is not over and that it is better to prevent. This is the message we are sending to the government with this request,” said Daniel Boyer, president of the FTQ, François Enault, first vice-president of the CSN, and Éric Gingras, president of the CSQ.

The three union leaders thus invite the government of Quebec to follow in the footsteps of the federal government “which granted 10 days of sick leave to all its workers through an amendment to the Canada Labor Code” to avoid this type of of location. This measure will take effect on December 1.

“Let’s put all the chances on our side to protect the population and strengthen our common fight against COVID-19”, concluded the three leaders.
